This song describes pretty well how I’ve been feeling the last several days. And from what I can see on Facebook – I’m not alone in these feelings lately!
So I felt led to take a break from our regular series (How to Find Wisdom) this month and take a few minutes to talk about it.
Worn Out & Overwhelmed?
Finances, busyness, relationships, eating habits, health, weather all take their toll – and usually one starts a domino effect on the others. None of us mean to knock over that first piece, and as we scramble to fix it, the others often fall in their place. So how can we fix it?
Fix #1: Go to Jesus
“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” Matthew 11:28-30
Often the first thing that goes when we are feeling worn out and overwhelmed is quality personal time with the Lord. We rush through our prayers and devotions, or neglect them altogether. However, Jesus made it pretty clear that we will find rest in Him, not a completed to-do list.
If we find ourselves worn out this needs to be our first fix – make (not find!) the time to pray and get into the Word!
Fix #2: Ask for Wisdom
Sometimes it’s clear as day why we are feeling worn out and overwhelmed. Other times we have no idea why we feel like we do. Either way we need to ask for wisdom to know what it is that’s led us to this point and how to get out of it, and how to stay out of it in the future.
Fix#3: Take some time away
This often seems counter-productive but whenever I’m feeling worn out and overwhelmed, I find that getting away for a set amount of time is the best thing I can do. Feeling upset, aggravated and overwhelmed is counter-productive no matter how much effort and time we put into a task.
Walking away for a set amount of time allows our body and minds to relax, and we can come back to the task at hand clear-headed and refreshed.
I recently took a 24-hiatus from Facebook and even from my computer – it helped immensely to be able to come back and start-over. It’s also part of the reason I’m taking a break in our series.
Fix #4: Take care of you
As busy ladies – the first person we stop taking care of is ourselves.
When we are busy and things are going crazy we don’t take time to feed, bathe, and clothe ourselves properly. We throw on whatever we can grab the quickest. Eat whatever requires the least amount of work and most amount of comfort. And pray no one sees or smells us when we are out.
However doing these things take a toll on our physical and emotional health. Not eating good food or drinking enough water rakes havoc on our hormones and fills us with toxins – which nobody’s got time for! And a quick change of clothes and even the tiniest bit of makeup (for me it’s eyeliner) can really make you feel better and more capable of facing the day.
So take a few minutes and grab a healthy snack and a large glass of water. Put on a fresh set of clothes, brush your hair, and put on whatever makes you feel better about yourself . It really does help everyone in the long run!
Fix #5: Let it go – or call for backup
We have to be realistic with our expectations of what we are capable of doing. Sometimes this means we have to let go of our perfectionism and just get something done. Right now for me this means I don’t need to write the perfect post or have the best graphics to go along with it – and I’ll be honest I’m struggling with wanting to make it happen. But I really need to just let it go and realize that perfectionism keeps me caught in the ‘Worn Out and Overwhelmed trap’. (I went back and added the image to be pinned at a later date (see Fix #4!))
Calling for backup is also sometimes necessary – though I admit I hate doing this the most. Often we think we can and must do it all. But there is wisdom in knowing when to call for backup – and actually taking the step to do it. And bonus – oftentimes us reaching out and asking for backup blesses the people we’ve asked. This can be financial blessing (in the case of asking a professional) or in the case of a friend by letting them feel useful and helpful to you. I’ve been blessed in both these areas when someone called me for backup – and it really does help both parties – so get rid of the guilt and call!
